An exceptional and highly unusual Victorian campaign writing chest dating from the second half of the 19th century, retaining a remarkable combination of practicality, craftsmanship and maritime character.
Constructed from solid timber with brass-mounted protective corner brackets, flush carrying handle and dovetailed construction throughout, this substantial travelling chest was built to accompany its owner on extended journeys.
The true highlight of the piece is the extraordinary sailor-made folk art decoration to the lid. The surface has been carefully inlaid with contrasting dark hardwood to depict two large sailing vessels, transforming a functional campaign chest into a deeply personal maritime object.
Opening the chest reveals a fitted correspondence interior complete with pen trays, document divisions, inkwell recesses and a concealed compartment housing three hidden drawers.
