A superb mid-20th century English wooden bakery crate, dated 1967 and stamped for Matthes Ltd of Great Yarmouth.

Constructed in solid timber with reinforcing battens and original metal corner plates, this piece carries beautifully worn industrial character throughout. The original black stencilled lettering remains clearly visible, including the “Matthes Ltd” mark and dated code, alongside additional maker’s stamp for R.H. Porter Ltd, Great Yarmouth.

Originally used within the bakery trade, likely for the storage and transportation of long loaves or baguettes, the crate has a wonderfully shallow and elongated form.
