Victorian Reverse-Painted Glass Advertising Paperweight – “The Yacht Laundry”, Southampton

A fine Victorian reverse-painted glass advertising paperweight, dating from the late 19th century and promoting “The Yacht Laundry – Yacht and Family Laundry, Southampton.”

The piece is formed as a solid glass dome, hand-ground and polished, with the advertisement hand-painted in reverse to the underside. The design features bold red lettering, pale blue text and green decorative flourishes, all executed in a manner typical of late Victorian commercial signage.

Such paperweights were produced for use on shop counters and desks, serving both as a practical object and a permanent advertisement for the business. Southampton’s strong maritime connections and thriving yachting scene during this period give this example particular historical interest.

The paperweight remains in good antique condition, showing surface scratches and wear consistent with age, with no cracks or chips to the glass. The decoration remains clear and legible.
