A charming and finely modelled Victorian novelty brass stamp holder, surmounted by a delightful cast brass seated bear figure, holding a staff.

The rectangular base is fitted with a hinged lid, opening to reveal two internal compartments, purpose-made for the separation of postage stamps by value, reflecting the importance of letter writing and postal etiquette in late Victorian society.

The bear finial is well detailed, with expressive facial features and textured fur, lending the piece strong decorative appeal beyond its original function. Objects of this type were intended for the writing desk or bureau, combining utility with playful ornamentation, a hallmark of late 19th-century design.

Condition: Good antique condition overall. The hinge operates smoothly. Surface wear, rubbing and mellow patination throughout, commensurate with age. No visible breaks or repairs.

Measuring (approximately) 2.5” tall, 2.25” wide, 2.25” depth
