A French SNCF Railway Sign reading ‘Voiture 133’ which translates to ‘Car’ or ‘Carriage’ ’133’ for the City of Tourcoing in Northern France.


These numbered plates were placed on the side of the carriages (passenger trains) to indicate carriage numbers for seat allocation and carriage destination.


Often during the night on the longer, sleeper trains, in Europe carriages were swapped around and added to other trains for other destinations, so these numbers were used to keep track of the carriages.


Dates back to around 1900, a nice piece of French railway history/memorabilia.
