A 19th Century Victorian Mourning Brooch Complete With Original Portrait
A beautifully preserved Victorian mourning brooch, dating to the late 19th century, centred with an original photographic portrait set beneath glass.
The oval photograph depicts a seated gentleman in formal attire, encapsulated within an elegant gilt metal frame featuring delicate openwork scroll decoration.
Mourning jewellery held deep cultural significance during the reign of Queen Victoria, who famously popularised prolonged mourning customs following the death of Prince Albert. Jewellery such as this served as both a deeply personal keepsake and a visible symbol of remembrance.
Condition; Very good antique condition overall. The glass is intact and clear, with only light surface wear.
The photographic portrait remains well preserved with good contrast. The frame shows minor age-related wear consistent with period use. Pin and clasp are present and functional.
Measuring approximately 1.5” wide
