19th-Century Wall-Hanging Candle Box — Mahogany/ Hardwood with Shaped Crest & Green Baize Interior
£135.00
A characterful 19th-century wall-hanging candle box, crafted in a warm hardwood, likely mahogany or a similar fine-grained timber, and retaining its original rural utility charm. Designed for practical domestic storage, these tall, narrow boxes were traditionally used to keep tallow or wax candles clean, dry and protected in households before the widespread adoption of oil and gas lighting.
This example features a classic shaped backboard with a circular suspension hole, allowing it to hang neatly on a cottage wall near a hearth or work area. The body is formed from simple but elegant hand-worked boards, with a narrow front opening for easy access.
Condition; Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. Light surface marks and minor historic imperfections to the timber, baize lining worn in places, all consistent with genuine period use. Structurally sound and displays beautifully.
Measurements; Height (box only): 15”, Height (including crest): 19.5”, Width: 6.5”, Depth: 5”
