19th Century Papier-Mâché Lacquered Hand Painted Snuff Box
A 19th century ornate hand painted snuff box. Made from papier-mâché and lacquered, in very good overall condition.
Snuff boxes were used to contain snuff, a powdered tobacco mixture that was inhaled.
Snuff-taking became highly popular in 18th-century Europe and was considered a status symbol among the elite, who commissioned elaborate snuff boxes made from various materials like gold, silver, ivory, or decorated with enamel or mother-of-pearl.
